After a medical facial peel, you expect to see flaky skin and peeling. But not everyone experiences peeling after a chemical peel. It all depends on the type of peel you get, as well as the condition of your skin.
## Your Skin Is Constantly Being Renewed 
Healthy skin is always being renewed. We shed dead skin cells every day, and these cells get washed away in the shower or brushed away by our clothes. The process is so slow that we don’t normally notice as old skin cells flake off to reveal new skin cells underneath. But as we age, this skin renewal process slows down. It takes longer for the body to make new skin cells and you may notice more dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. Your skin may start to look dull and dry. 
## A Chemical Peel Refreshes Your Skin
A chemical peel can speed up the natural process of skin renewal by helping your body strip away dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin. The acid in chemical peels will break the bonds that hold dead skin cells in place. When these bonds are broken, the old layer of skin can flake or peel off. Removing dead skin cells can make room for new skin cells and improve the appearance of your skin, giving you a brighter complexation and smoother skin.
## Will My Skin Peel After a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels use different acids to target different layers of your skin. A light chemical peel only reaches the top layer of skin, while medium and deep peels can penetrate further into your skin. If you have a light peel, you’re less likely to notice visible peeling, since only the top layer of skin is affected. Deeper peels are more likely to show flaking and peeling in the week after your chemical peel. More bonds between cells are broken, so more dead skin cells can peel away. 

The condition of your skin can also make peeling more or less noticeable. If you have dry skin, you’ll notice more peeling as the acids work to strip away dry or dead skin cells. If your skin is well hydrated, there may be less visible peeling. Flaking is often most noticeable when you wash your face, but you may notice peeling at other times as well. Whether or not you notice peeling, you can be confident that the acid in the peel is working to remove dead skin cells and revitalize your skin. 
## How Often Should You Get a Chemical Peel?
If your skin is healthy and you’re getting a peel to maintain glowing skin, we recommend gentle peels every four to six weeks. If you want to address a skin concern, such as dry skin, acne, or hyperpigmentation, you can get a peel every three to four weeks until your skin health improves.
